What is an Attenuator or Duct Silencer? Known as either an Attenuator or a Silencer Attenuators or Silencers are installed into a HVAC system for the purpose of reducing noise transmitted inside the ventilation ductwork. Although they are reffered to as Silencers in the HVAC industry, it is important to note that they do not completley silence noise. Duct silencers are commonly installed on intake and discharge sides of a fans or air handling units. To enhance the attentuation of the sound created in the duct, a longer length silencer can be used.
